July–September 2019

AIEA member Joanna Regulska’s essay “The Changing Role of the SIO: New Directions in Internationalization and Student Success” was featured in the Fall 2019 issue of the IIENetworker magazine, The New Student: Shifting the Global Education Paradigm.

AIEA President Cheryl Matherly will deliver the keynote speech "The UK’s competitive position in the global HE market" at the Westminster Higher Education Forum's policy conference "Growing international student numbers in the UK - recruitment, visa reform, student experience and career progression."

Written by Executive Director Darla Deardoff, the Routledge Focus on Environment and Sustainability series entry Manual for Developing Intercultural Competencies: Story Circles was published and made available through open access in August 2019.

AIEA President Cheryl Matherly co-authored the chapter "Linking Learning Abroad and Employability" in Routledge's Internationalization and Employability in Higher Education. This volume also includes a chapter co-authored by Executive Director Darla Deardorff titled "Cultural understanding as a key skill for employability."

 
May–June 2019

The New York Times article "From Albania to Singapore, U.S. Students Look for Tailored Experiences Abroad" featured quotes and commentary from AIEA President Cheryl Matherly, Policy Advisory Committee chair Tom Bogenschild, and members Melissa Torres, Donald Rubin, and Andrew Gordon.

AIEA member Joanna Regulska was selected as the first-ever recipient of the Senior International Officer (SIO) Award from the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Members Elizabeth Brewer and Anthony Ogden co-authored the May 2019 Stylus publication Education Abroad and the Undergraduate Experiencewhich also features a foreword by AIEA member Brian Whalen.

AIEA member Brett Berquist was announced as a Keynote Speaker at The World of Work: IEAA Employability Symposium 2019. 

AIEA member Jeet Joshee co-led a book release for Kiran Marahatta’s book Nepali Who is Who in the USA and was interviewed for the event by Nepal24hours.com.

AIEA President Cheryl Matherly was quoted in The PIE News's article "US ushers in huge hike in SEVIS fee charged to international students."

AIEA member Rahul Choudaha was quoted in the SI News article "How are Chinese students being affected by the US-China trade war?"

Leadership Development Committee member Stephanie Doscher published a featured essay in University World News called "Why the future is bright for international higher education."

Past President Hilary Kahn was named Associate Vice Chancellor for International Affairs and Associate Vice President for International Affairs at Indiana University.

 
March-April 2019

The April 2019 Stylus publication Integrating Worlds: How Off-Campus Study Can Transform Undergraduate Education is co-authored by AIEA member Malene Torp and features a foreword by member Jane Edwards.

AIEA members GianMario Besana, Ni Jadon, Jose Santiago, José Celso Freire Junior, Thomas Buntru, Kees Kouwenaar, and Michael Wilhelm presented at the FAUBAI 2019 Conference.

Work by AIEA members was featured in the April 21, 2019 issue of University World News . AIEA Member JY Zhou authored the article "How to engage faculty in curriculum internationalisation," while member (and 2019 Klasek Award recipient) Hans De Wit contributed to the featured editorial, "Internationalisation in Higher Education for Society."

AIEA President Cheryl Matherly led a plenary session at CONAHEC's 19th North American Higher Education Conference, where member Sean Manley-Casimir led an opening session; AIEA member Thomas Buntru also presented.

AIEA member Elaine Meyer-Lee delivered a plenary lecture entitled “The Value and Pedagogy of Global Learning for 21st Century Students" to mark the opening of the two-day conference "Global Education for All: Renewing Our Vision" at Goshen College.

Karin Fischer's Chronicle of Higher Education article "How International Education’s Golden Age Lost Its Sheen" features quotes from AIEA members Ahmad Ezzeddine, Hans de Wit, Joanna Regulska, Patti McGill Peterson, William Brustein, and Patricia Juza.  

Immediate Past President Penelope Pynes presented at APAIE 2019 Malaysia along with members Linda Angell, Shingo Ashizawa, Katherine Belov, Lee Sternberger, Darren Schemmer, Downing Thomas, Jason Cushen, Brent White, Judy Peter, Joanna Regulska, Regine Legault-Bouchard, Margaret de Lange, Douglas Proctor, Peter Mascher, Karen Schwartz, Amy Conger, Hsiu-Zu Ho, Katherine Beaumont, Edilio Mazzoleni, and Ivor Emmanuel.

Congratulations to all the AIEA member institutions awarded NAFSA's 2019 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization! Among the honorees of the 2019 Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization were Kirkwood Community College, Miami University, and West Virginia University. The 2019 Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award was given to SUNY Buffalo State (for the International Professional Development Schools Consortium), the University of Evansville (for UE Builds: Local and Global), and Virginia Tech (for the Rising Sophomore Abroad Program). 

An article entitled "Commercialization of Internationalization: Context, Trends, Limits, and Dangers" by AIEA Past President John Hudzik was included in the March 2019 NAFSA Senior Fellows publication Internationalization in a Time of Disruption.

AIEA Past President Sabine Klahr and AIEA member Hilary Landorf co-authored the article "Global Learning Inspires College-Level Mathematics" in the January/February 2019 edition of AAC&U News. 

AIEA member Rahul Choudaha was quoted in the article "US colleges fret over fall in Chinese students" on China.org.cn.

AIEA President Cheryl Matherly and Past Presidents William Brustein and Susan Buck Sutton presented at the IIE Summit 2019 along with members Mark Algren, Tim Barnes, Angela Bell, Rajika Bhandari, McKenna Brown, Mary Catherine Chase, Dan Davidson, Jennifer Engel, Cheryl Francisconi, Athena Fulay, Jane Gatewood, Wondwossen Gebreyes, Andrew Gordon, Gundolf Graml, Stephen Hanson, Donald Hempson, Chad Hoseth, Dale LaFleur, Rick Lee, Wesley Milner, Rick Nader, Clare Overmann, Suzanne Panferov Reese, Joanna Regulska, and Don Rubin. 

Member institutions Agnes Scott College, Lehigh University, the University of Evansville, and the University of South Florida were named among the Heiskell Award Winners at the IIE Summit 2019. 

AIEA member Rahul Choudaha was interviewed on immigration policy for the U.S. News and World Report article "Immigration Sting Could Hurt U.S. Reputation" and the PIE News article "US: Fake 'Uni' Sting Could Harm Int'l Numbers."

As detailed by the Times of India, AIEA member Jun Liu met with leaders from Panjab University to discuss Stony Brook University and PU's Joint Institute of Sustainability Development.

In an article published by CNBC-TV18, AIEA member Rahul Choudaha examined the study-abroad trends of students from India.

Choudaha was also interviewed by Business in Vancouver on the effects of the Huawei backlash on international education in British Columbia.

 
October-December 2018

AIEA member Rahul Choudaha was interviewed by The PIE News on international student enrollment in the United States.

AIEA board member Torian Lee was recognized by Mayor LaToya Cantrell of New Orleans and the mayor's Office of International Relations as part of the city's International Education Day event.

AIEA Members Megan Gibbons, Ricardo Castro-Salazar, Martha Johnson, Joel Gallegos, John Stauff, and Ilir Zherka are all slated to present at CIEE in November.

Members Chris Cartwright, Joseph Hoff, and Stephanie Doscher presented at the IUPI Assessment Institute, while Past President Gil Latz served as Global Learning Track Coordinator. Members Shawn Conner-Rondot and Angela Miller also attended.

At AAC&U’s 2018 Global Engagement and Spaces of Practice, Sharon Nagy led a session called “Becoming a Strategic Priority in Both Word and Deed.” Kati Csoman led a facilitated discussion called “Intentional Learning Spaces: Living and Learning Communities.”

Executive Director Darla K. Deardorff presented at the REIES 2018 Conference in Quito, Ecuador. The conference theme was Comprehensive Internationalization: Key Issues y Decisive Resources for Ecuadorian Higher Education. Around 30 institutions attended the conference at the National Polytechnic School.
